Federal Work-Study Student Employment
Removed April 25, 2017
Supplement departmental budgets with federal funding by utilizing undergraduate student employees who qualify for financial need-based Federal Work-Study.
The University of Illinois has been an active participant in the Federal Work-Study program (previously known as College Work Study) since its inception in 1965. Federal Work-Study began as a Great Society program under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964.
The purpose of the Federal Work-Study program is to develop part-time employment opportunities for students who demonstrate financial need. To be considered for the Federal Work-Study program, students apply each academic year for need based federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial need is determined by federal guidelines and institutional policy administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Financial assistance in the form of employment opportunities is available primarily to undergraduate students. A limited number of graduate students are considered for Federal Work-Study funding each year. Most departments on campus participate in the Federal Work-Study program so nearly all undergraduate student jobs can be funded by Federal Work-Study. Once hired, a Federal Work-Study student is considered a regular student employee in terms of hourly wage rates but is subject to Federal Work-Study program earnings guidelines and eligibility requirements.
Students may search for Federal Work-Study jobs on the Student Employment Virtual Job Board at https://secure.admin.illinois.edu/osfa/vjb/. The first priority of fund usage is for Federal Work-Study jobs on campus. A percentage of the Federal Work-Study funds are also used to meet the federal community service requirements and to participate in the America Reads/America Counts programs.
Program procedures and details regarding student hourly compensation can be found at http://www.osfa.illinois.edu/aid/employment/index.html. This site also contains specific student employment information that may be used as a resource for campus employing departments. Additional questions can be answered by calling (217) 333-0600 or by sending e-mail to email@example.com. The Student Employment Unit is physically located at the Office of Student Financial Aid, 250 Student Services Arcade Building, 620 E. John Street, Champaign, IL 61820.
Although funding levels fluctuate yearly, Federal Work-Study continues to be a federal assistance program with a great deal of governmental support. The program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign at the present time provides funding of wages on a 50% federal and 50% departmental basis. Employing departments are notified in advance if the funding ratio is to be changed.
