Building Signage

Purpose

To ensure high quality standards that will enhance and support effective and positive identification of the University of Illinois and units on the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Scope

Each permanent and temporary facility may have a building identification sign to display standard text including the building’s proper name and address. This policy establishes the standards for building signage on the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Authority

This policy is implemented under the authority of the Executive Director of Facilities & Services.

Policy

Facilities & Services (F&S) must authorize the text, layout, location, and construction of all building and directional signs on the Urbana-Champaign campus. F&S Planning Division must approve any exception to the standard text.

Processes/Procedures/Guidelines

Sign layouts are designed in the F&S Planning Division in accordance with the Exterior Signage Guidelines (PDF) for the Urbana-Champaign campus. In some cases, it may be necessary to display only a portion of the building name, and in rare instances another line of text may be added to denote a function within the building.

Construction, installation and repairs are performed, or arranged by, the F&S Grounds Department.

Allied agencies and auxiliary units are expected to pay for all building identification signage costs (i.e. materials and labor related to both the construction and installation of new signs and the repair or replacement of existing signs.)

The distribution of costs for University units on the Urbana campus is as follows:

  1. Costs related to signs for new (or acquired) facilities should be paid by the project budget.
  2. Costs related to maintenance of existing building signs should be paid by F&S Grounds Department.
  3. Costs related to the addition of supplemental building signs or the replacement of existing building signs will be negotiated among involved parties.
