Graduate Student Residence Credit

The Executive Committee has approved the following statements to define residence credit and the residence requirements for advanced degrees.

The Master’s Degree

Unless otherwise specified in the departmental listings, the credit requirement for this degree is at least thirty-two hours. At least twelve of the thirty-two hours must be in courses numbered in the 500 series, and eight of the twelve must be in the major field.

At least one-half of the minimum hours required for the degree must be in courses meeting on the Urbana-Champaign campus, the Chicago campus, the Springfield campus, or in other locations approved by the Graduate College for residence credit.

The Doctorate

A doctoral program covers three stages as defined in the Graduate College Handbook for Students, Faculty and Staff and includes at least ninety-six hours. At least sixty-four hours must be in courses including thesis credit, meeting on the Urbana-Champaign campus, the Chicago campus, the Springfield campus, or in other locations approved by the Graduate College for residence credit.
