Aerial Activities Over, On, or In Campus Property

Purpose

To maintain a safe and secure environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors regarding aerial activities over, on, or in campus property.

Scope

This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, and visitors conducting aerial activities over, on, or in campus property.

Authority

Executive Director of Public Safety.

Policy

All individuals, campus units, and other groups conducting aerial activities over, on, or in campus property must comply with all applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) regulations.

University-owned manned or unmanned aerial vehicles and/or systems cannot be used for personal/recreational use.

Definitions

Aerial Activities
The use of any manned or unmanned aerial vehicle and/or system, including but not limited to drones, fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, hot air balloons, hang gliders, parachutes, or other special airborne equipment. Aerial activities subject to this policy do not include authorized flights departing from or arriving at Willard Airport and operated within applicable FAA regulations.
Campus Property
Any property owned, leased, occupied, operated or otherwise controlled by the University of Illinois on behalf of the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Processes/Procedures/Guidelines

Prior to conducting aerial activities outdoors for non-recreational use (i.e., educational use, research activities and university business operations) on campus property, the individual, campus unit, or other group must obtain approval from the Division of Public Safety by submitting a request to dpscomments@illinois.edu.

Prior to conducting aerial activities inside campus property, the individual, campus unit, or other group must obtain approval from Code Compliance & Fire Safety, at fandscodefire@illinois.edu, in addition to obtaining facility approval.

Exceptions

There are no exceptions to this policy.
