Carpeting and Drapery

Restrictions on installation of carpeting and/or draperies are a necessity due to higher costs for maintenance, repair, and replacement.

All Urbana-Champaign campus units must follow this policy regarding the installation of carpeting and/or draperies in new and existing buildings.

This policy is implemented under the authority of the Executive Director of Facilities & Services.

Carpeting or drapery installed in University buildings must first be approved by Facilities & Services, Planning Division. Specifications as to color range, type, quality, and fireproofing standards must be approved by Facilities & Services Planning Division, Purchasing Division, and the department primarily occupying the remodeled space.

The addition of carpeting and/or draperies may be permitted for the areas indicated below.

  • Chancellor’s, Vice Chancellors’ or equivalent officers’ office areas
  • Deans’ office areas
  • Offices of Senior Administrative officers
  • Department Heads’ offices
  • Conference rooms
  • Museum/display areas
  • Libraries
  • Residence hall corridors, lounges, sleeping and living spaces

Routine carpet cleaning will be provided by Facilities & Services, Maintenance Division, generally limited to once-a-month vacuuming and an annual wet cleaning in the above mentioned areas only. (Wet cleaning schedule may be changed or eliminated dependent upon staff and funding availability.)

Carpeting and/or draperies will not be installed in other areas unless required for acoustical or functional needs, and only upon recommendation of the Professional Service Consultant (for new buildings) or the approval of Facilities & Services (for existing buildings).

Cleaning and repair of draperies shall be the responsibility of the using department.

Maintenance and repair of carpet in areas other than those listed above will be the responsibility of the using department.

Replacement of existing carpeting and/or draperies shall be handled in a manner identical to that of a request for carpeting and/or draperies in existing buildings.

For reasons of maintenance, liability, and consistency, non-University owned carpeting and/or draperies will not be permitted to be installed in any University facilities.

If an exception to this policy is desired, the Dean or Director of the unit must submit a written request to Facilities & Services, Planning and Design Division, indicating the reason(s) why an exception should be considered. Appeals to decisions made by Facilities & Services, Planning Division may be made to the Executive Director, Facilities & Services.

The use of entrance mats or “walk-off” carpeting will be at the discretion of Facilities & Services, and is not covered under this policy.

Departments are encouraged to contact Facilities & Services, Maintenance Division for consultation on proper maintenance. Further information can be obtained by calling the Facilities & Services, Director of Planning, (217) 244-8817.
